Program notes:
With “Monroe County, Index,” I wanted to convey a sense of place, person, and narrative using line items from a book’s index. The text was derived from Talcott E. Wing’s History of Monroe County, Michigan (1890). Because the items in an index are alphabetical, the piece has an inherent timeline. The musical material juxtaposes the list-like text with colorful and playful gestures.
